Getting Started with the Interface

When you first open Photoshop, the workspace might seem daunting. The Toolbar is located on the left side, containing tools for selecting, cropping, and retouching. The Options Bar at the top changes based on which tool you have selected. On the right, you find the Panels, the most important being the Layers panel. One of the most important concepts for beginners is non-destructive editing. This means making changes to an image without overwriting the original pixel data. You can achieve this by using Layer Masks instead of the Eraser tool and Adjustment Layers instead of applying color changes directly to the image. To start, try importing a photo via File > Open. Use the Quick Selection Tool (W) to isolate a subject. Once selected, click the ‘Add Layer Mask’ icon at the bottom of the layers panel to hide the background. For color adjustments, go to the Adjustments panel and select ‘Hue/Saturation’ to change the mood of your photo without permanently altering the original file.
